After reading and re-reading the PDF, I'm more curious about some things.... did you catch the part about Jessor being a believer in technology - using mechanical ventilation for bathrooms which allowed their placement away from the outer walls. I'm guessing this allows for larger spaces for the bedrooms and livingrooms, etc., at the outer walls. So, looking at the floorplans at David Chesler's site, I see that Jessor adopted this at Co-op City - the bathrooms are on the inside, without windows. Ours are all on the exterior, usually taking up precious space between the bedroom and kitchen - but, with windows for ventilation.

I'm wondering about the top floors in your buildings - especially the triple-cores. Do they step back on the top 3 floors, with smaller-sized apartments up there, but, having huge terraces that span the width of the apartment? That's what most of our top floors are like. I can't tell from the photos I've seen of Co-op City.

The article talks about the UHF's/Jessor's emphasis on the interior spaces v. the outside. But, clearly, there was much more emphasis spent on the outside at Co-op City than at any of ours (other than Amalgamated Dwellings). From what I can see in various photos, you've got different colored bricks and alternating styled balcony railings to add some visual diversity (not to mention the different styles of buildings themselves).

And, lastly, I am very curious to know why some of your buildings have 2nd bedroom windows on the end walls, while others do not. I remember reading about this - I think in some info that David forwarded to me. What I'm wondering is did someone miscalculate and did the buildings with only 1 window in those rooms not meet the code at the time? or, did the code requirements change after construction began? Do the buildings with only 1 window in those bedrooms supplement the ventilation with an interior mechanical vent, like in the bathrooms? We have one or two apartment lines here where this is the case. The layout did not allow a window large enough to meet the code for ventilation (so I've been told), so there is an air vent in addition to the window in those rooms.

That same Ric Burns episode showed a very brief segment with Robert Moses standing in the livingroom of one of the new buildings, looking out thru the large picture window at the Manhattan skyline in the background. From the angle shown, I'm almost sure he was standing in one of the top floor, East River Co-op apartments.
